Make Your Website Accessible Or Get Sued

Don't hire just anyone to develop your website or you too could be facing a lawsuit. Recently, blind web users have filed a lawsuit against Target.

Pretty on the outside and...

Pretty on the outside but...

When I heard that Target was sued over accessibility to their website, I immediately thought of what trouble they could have saved had they thought about it in the first place.  There are so many aspects to accessibility, yet there are two usual suspects that loom at the top of the poor-web-design pile.

To see if your webmaster measures up to at least the minimum level of accessibility compliance, here are a thoughts to ponder.

Does your webmaster:

  1. Make sure your menu is fully accessible even with JavaScript disabled
  2. Ensure your menu maintains its hierarchy when CSS is disabled

Sure you can get someone to design you a complete custom website for $500, but the chances are high you will be getting exactly what you paid for... something pretty on the outside and NOT so pretty on the inside.  To learn more about accessibility please visit Wikipedia.
